Description

Please note opening SUNDAY and MONDAY

Before the large lake or the rambling country farmhouse come into view, the driveway passes a rusty biplane sculpture mounted on a tall pole, a telling sign that an aircraft enthusiast as well as a keen gardener live at Al Ru Farm!

Ruth Irving, inspired by her visits to gardens all over the world, has created a series of garden spaces each with its own distinctive style and palette of plants. Winding throughout, anchoring and tying the areas together is the colour mauve which works well with all other colour ranges.

In spring, the woodland garden is awash with bluebells, columbines, campanula and hellebores.  There are colour-themed perennial borders, a lily pond, a wisteria and rose covered arch leading into the white garden, a formal rose garden and a delightfully informal wild garden filled with perfumed freesias, tiny white lawn daisies, tulips and iris. A pergola covered with wisteria adds nicely to the space.

Each year several thousand tulips and many more ranunculi are planted and in spring their spectacular flowers create drifts of dazzling colour.  The blossom of six different varieties of crab apple creates a joyful feel.

The five hectares of garden progress throughout the seasons with never a moment when there is not some hero in the plant world flying the flag for colour and exuberance!

Guineafowl, chickens, cats, a friendly cow and new puppy wander the grounds for you to enjoy.

Please be prepared to linger a while as there is much to see and enjoy about this garden – it is big, boldly planted and beautiful!

Extra activities: Meet Ruth for a walk and talk around the garden at 11am and 2pm each day. There will be stalls selling plants, garden sculptures and jams from the local area. One Tree Hill Uniting Church will supply delicious teas and lunches, and One Tree Hill CFS will again look after the gate.

Size: 10 acres, 4 ha.

Please note: There is a large lake on the property.

The nominated charities are the Country Fire Service; and Uniting Church Orphanage in Uganda.
