Description

An oasis for the soul with garden rooms and special spaces. Churston offers a mix of cottage colour, classical style, fruit and vegetable production intermingled with creative ideas and artistic whimsy.

Waterwise Mediterranean plants and fragrant roses harmonise with fruit trees and vegies. Many of the fruit trees have been espaliered to save space, increase production and create different rooms. Produce is shared locally.

Deciduous trees on the boundary give protection from the hot north-westerly sun. Succulents add an architectural aspect in low water use areas. Many plants are umbels to attract native bees.

Vegies and herbs are grown in raised wicking beds for water efficiency and protection from the free ranging bunny. Bantam chickens offer manure and pest control, while the former eat weeds and nibble down the pea straw regrowth. Worm towers add to the mix of organic fertilizer.

In light of the recycling ethos, paths consist of old broken concrete and bricks. Other surfaces are graveled, so rain can be absorbed.

Although the garden is busy it still has a feeling of peace, with contemplative sitting areas.

Across the road is a 200m long bee and butterfly garden created by volunteers, including the garden owners.

Please note: this garden is unsuitable for wheelchairs.
