Description

The owners of Forestbrook Estate have lovingly expanded the pre-existing two-acre garden on this 46 acre property, taking additional space from the surrounding paddocks to establish fruit and vegetable growing areas, tropical gardens, natives, annual and perennial ornamentals. The garden was affected by the 2015 Sampson Flat bushfire, but it’s now hard to tell because of the rebuilding and replanting that have taken place. Dead eucalypts in the surrounding woodland remain the only clue.

There are many garden rooms and spaces on this property. Lawns, hedged beds and standard roses with an under planting of hellebores greet visitors as they come down the driveway towards the house. Behind the house, sheltered by a pergola and a massive fig tree, is a lush fernery with tree ferns, camellias and hydrangeas. Native plants have their special microcosms on sunny hillside slopes. There’s a garden pavilion nestled in a gully that has been planted to suit boggy winter conditions but also survive harsh summers. Adding a second entrance has enhanced this area.

In a further move towards self-sufficiency, this year the owner has built a new potting and propagation shed (with a verandah, table and chairs for the inevitable and necessary tea breaks) and chook house using recycled materials.

Size: 2 acres, 0.8ha.

Please note: there are some steps; this garden is unsuitable for wheelchairs.

The nominated charity is: Cornerstone Foundation Aust. Inc.
