This garden will open under a Covid Safe plan. Please allow suitable distancing and follow health etiquette. Please check back prior to the weekend opening in case there has been any change in Health Department regulations.

Five gardens at Henley Beach join for a combined event showcasing alternative takes on urban gardening at the beach. Each garden is different, but the common thread is that all these gardeners love and enjoy their gardens - their communal joie de vivre is enviable!

They are not large or big-budget, but friendly gardens where food is grown and shared with family, friends and neighbours - they all feature a strong productive element.

The tour of these gardens will start at 23 Reedie St, Henley, where visitors can purchase a $15 ticket to see all five gardens. Please note that none of these gardens are suitable for prams or wheelchairs.

There will be a plant stall and members of the Mediterranean Garden Society will be available to provide advice.

Sue & Andrew’s Garden

The functional front garden and seating area, where on balmy summer evenings neighbours get together to enjoy movie nights screened on the house wall.  The area, with its pebbled mosaic floor, is enclosed by a semi-circular low wall which provides extra seating. Plants are climate compatible shrubs from Mediterranean regions. Several large tubs planted with citrus and succulents have the ideal backdrop in the white rendered walls of the classic 1930s bungalow.

An extension to the back of the house has created separate and quite different garden rooms.  Two pear trees have been expertly espaliered and beautifully decorate the adjacent courtyard wall.

At the rear of the property where the garden opens onto the lane, is an ochre-washed pizza oven and beside it, an outdoor dining area is shaded by a leafy vine covered pergola. In the adjacent garden beds is a range of vegetables and olives; productive and attractive as well as adding to the Mediterranean mood.  A substantial potted frangipani positioned to be viewed from the large glass internal windows completes the picture.

A productive and inspiring entertainers’ garden!

Please note: This garden is not suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

Extra activities: Enjoy home-made pizza cooked in the garden pizza oven, from 12-2pm both days.

Size: 750sqm

The nominated charity for this garden is: KickStart For Kids
