Five gardens at Henley Beach join for a combined event showcasing alternative takes on urban gardening at the beach. Each garden is different, but the common thread is that all these gardeners love and enjoy their gardens - their communal joie de vivre is enviable!
They are not large or big-budget, but friendly gardens where food is grown and shared with family, friends and neighbours - they all feature a strong productive element.
The tour of these gardens will start at 23 Reedie St, Henley, where visitors can purchase a $15 ticket to see all five gardens. Please note that none of these gardens are suitable for prams or wheelchairs.
There will be a plant stall and members of the Mediterranean Garden Society will be available to provide advice.
Irina, Andrew and Babushka Maria's Garden
Three generations share this productive, family friendly garden.
Irina is a keen gardener and has put her plant knowledge to good use selecting plants that will deal with coastal conditions.
The small front garden is still establishing, but thriving in the back garden are tropical plants that are lush and leafy in appearance yet suited to SA’s Mediterranean climate. A timber slat screen which counters the strong salty winds also gives an enclosed sheltered feel to the area, while a spa adds to the resort-like ambiance. Lawn and about 20 fruit trees are integrated into the design and as well there are vegetables, herbs and chooks.
Irina’s love of plants led to an interest in growing pot plants on the patio and indoors and their foliage adds to the tropical feel of the garden. Her mother Maria is a resourceful, retired Russian construction manager in her eighties who also lives on the property and has a talent for producing something out of nothing! Maria is a keen tomato grower and has ingeniously used scrap materials found on the street to make a multi-tiered versatile growing area in the compact space behind her apartment.
A beautifully maintained garden, well planned to maximise the space for a range of family activities as well as providing produce and a source of gardening pleasure for family members.
Please note: this garden is not suitable for prams and wheelchairs.
Size: 750sqm
