Mandalay is a magnificent garden!

The first sight of the stone home and its garden, inspired by the classical style of the Mediterranean, is delightful. Among deciduous trees, rosemary is tightly clipped into sinuous shapes to contrast with large round domes of buxus and viburnum and the tall upright spires of pencil pines. Hedges enclose the stone edged pond that extends the length of the house, giving it a secluded feel and allowing a peek through to the elegant bronze statue in the adjoining courtyard.

Behind the house, the layout is influenced by classical Italian gardens with strategically placed urns and dramatic sculptures providing focal points inside neatly clipped, hedged garden rooms, with avenues of pencil pines, white gravelled paths, grand flights of steps, topiary balls, sculptures and urns. The looser forms of lavender and salvias and the strappy foliage of phormiums and grasses soften the clipped formality.

Adjoining the house, an ornate fountain is the centre-piece to a sheltered courtyard and here there are roses, camellias and pretty pastel flowering plants. In the outer areas the traditional theme incorporates water efficient Australian natives and plants from other Mediterranean climates.  Three substantial ‘fruit cages’ house productive trees and vegetables and there is a thriving wetland where waste water from the property’s desalination plant is purified naturally by native water plants and reeds.

Mandalay is a peaceful and romantic green oasis designed with prudent plant selection and use of local materials to sit comfortably within the surrounding harsh Australian landscape.

Extra activities: The garden has become a favoured venue for weddings and over the open weekend the elegant facilities will be used to host meals. A gourmet boxed lunch suitable for 2-4 people can be pre-ordered - click Mandalay for more details and to pre-book Grazing Boxes. Or, select on the day from a rustic, seasonal menu including lasagne, arancini, polpette and salads available at the Potting Shed Café. To accompany, Mr Riggs will host a pop-up bar, and home-made cakes, coffee and tea will also be on offer. Undercover tables and seating will be available in the charming, heated Ivy Barn, in the courtyard marquee and under umbrellas throughout the garden. (Please note: Grazing Boxes are available for pre-order only and will not be part of the Potting Shed Cafe menu). Please also note entry costs detailed below.
