Nestled on a sloping stony site, Lelant is a tranquil garden where Mediterranean and native plants have been cleverly blended.

The view from the house is across the small valley, to where a steep natural water course takes the winter rain to a sizable pool shaded by the canopies of eucalypts already on the site when the garden was established 18 years ago. A meandering path and stepping stone steps lead down past pockets of plants to the far side of the pool. On the embankment above, despite the heavy winter frosts, aloes and agaves survive, their foliage contrasting with the surrounding indigenous plants.

Closer to the house, salvias, rosemary, succulents and pencil pines add a Mediterranean ambience with callistemons, grevilleas, correas, eriostemon and other Australian plants attracting and offering protection to native birds.

Rocks from the site have been used to create retaining walls, border garden beds and to make steps. A variety of pots and garden art add splashes of colour and interest.

An unused water tank has been given new life as a raised vegetable garden bed; there are fruit trees and chooks.

A ‘gardener’s garden’ in a bush setting – restful, diverse and eclectic.

Extra activities: Plant stall.

Size: 2 acres; 0.8ha

Please note: there are a pond, dam and fish pond on the property, as well as steep slopes, steps and uneven paths. This garden is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs.
