Description

This garden will open with its neighbor, with tickets at $12 for both - sorry, no concessions.

The garden will open under covid guidelines. We encourage you to bring cash as EFTPOS facilities are not always available.

The view over the garden from the deck behind the Metzger home is breathtaking! The graceful arching fronds of around 80 tree ferns on the hillside below create a leafy green layer so dense it allows only glimpses of the understory plants and the network of paths that meander down the slope.

The criss crossing paths lead through the forest of tree ferns to a boardwalk which edges the creek and doubles as a viewing platform for the several trickling little winter waterfalls.  Mature elms, liquidambars, paulownias, acers and various maples shade the garden and create a sheltered microclimate for many spring flowering plants. In the summer months hydrangeas, fuchsias, gingers, bromeliads, staghorns and ferns add both flower and foliage colour. Flowering in the sunnier spots are agapanthus, cannas and several different coloured varieties of the very showy and sweetly perfumed Brugmansia (angel's trumpet).

The canopies of the tall trees, the higher-than-average rainfall of the location, a natural spring and a creek at the bottom of the garden create the perfect environment for the tree ferns that thrive here and create the feel of a rain forest. There are two species; Dicksonia antarctica with trunks to around two metres and Cyathea cooperi with elegant slender trunks reaching up to four metres high.

A very diverse garden - from succulents and roses at the sunny front entrance to the lush green ecosphere of the delightfully shady and cool back garden.

Extra activities: Morning and afternoon tea will be offered.

Please note: there are several small ponds and a creek. Some paths are also a little steep, but have non-slip surfaces. This garden is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Size: 0.75 acres
